The new smoking law is part of a four-year phase-out period under the revised EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD), which came into force on May 19, 2014, and took effect in EU member states on May 20, 2016. Until now, flavored cigarettes were limited to packs of 20, but as of May 20, they have been completely banned.
The ban covers capsule, click, click-and-roll, crushball, and menthol cigarettes, but fortunately does not include vaping products or heated tobacco products. Deborah Arnott, Chief Executive of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), said the new rules mean that “no one may manufacture or supply cigarettes or hand-rolling tobacco with the following characteristics:
filters, paper, packaging, capsules, or other components containing flavorings;
filters, paper, or capsules containing tobacco or nicotine; or
a technical feature that allows consumers to alter the smell, taste, or smoke intensity of the product.”
