New York Budget Bans Flavored Vaping Products and Halts Cannabis Legalization

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s $117 billion budget includes controversial measures: a ban on flavored vaping products and a dropped proposal to legalize cannabis. Critics say the move left little room for debate.
Governor Andrew Cuomo's $117 billion new budget has implemented some questionable measures. Among other things, it bans flavored vaping products and abandons the proposal to legalize cannabis products. "The coronavirus is not only an excuse for implementing malicious policies but also for little to no debate. An article on rationality points out that officials can also use this situation to abandon good reforms."
"The budget implements many bad regulations while abandoning or scaling back some good ones. The entire budget was finalized with almost no discussion or debate."

Cannabis legalization has been abandoned for the second consecutive year. Cuomo's excuse is that managing the coronavirus and squeezing the virus in the legalization plan is just "too much," given the latest data, this is a significant action (or more accurately, inaction) regarding public health.

A recent study published by JAMA Network has shown that EVALI occurs in states where cannabis is a legal product is less common. This again indicates that most EVALI cases are found in states where consumers cannot legally access recreational cannabis dispensaries, forcing them to resort to the black market to purchase such products.

This study confirms the issues that public health experts have pointed out for years. Prohibition does not work; wise action is needed! Research from around the world shows that consumers' response to making products unavailable typically shifts to purchasing banned items on the black market. This is especially true for minors, who as a demographic are more inclined to try and engage in risky behaviors.

This means, sadly, that in addition to the illegal sale of cannabis, similar behaviors can now be expected in New York State to obtain flavored vape products. Ironically, this is what led to the outbreak of EVALI.
