Juul Files Patent for AI-Powered Device to Limit Nicotine Intake

The patent describes a device linked to a vaporizer and alternative nicotine or non-nicotine substances to gradually reduce intake. Machine learning may adjust nicotine output based on user behavior.
The patent application describes the device as being "connected" to an evaporator (used to vaporize nicotine) and will substitute nicotine and similar non-nicotine products (such as citric acid) to gradually reduce the user's nicotine intake. The application states, "The controller can apply machine learning based on user behavior (using 'heavy puffing') to adjust the delivery of nicotine and/or non-nicotine vaporizable substances," and this behavior "can be learned by monitoring the use of the evaporator and user behavior."
In other words, once the device, which can connect to a smartphone, "understands" the frequency and amount of nicotine puffs taken, it will determine how and when to replace non-nicotine. This will lead to a gradual reduction in nicotine vaporization to help wean users off.

James Monsees, co-founder and Chief Product Officer of Juul, stated that the company plans to launch a device connected to smartphones in 2018 that will authenticate users to help them quit when needed. "There will be a machine learning algorithm that will solve this for you, so you won't even have to think about the request you made. But we will provide you with the simplest option possible."

Under Attack
Meanwhile, lawmakers, health agencies, and angry parents have continuously accused Juul of fueling the current alleged youth "epidemic". Since merging with Altria, the manufacturer has lost credibility as it fundamentally reduced harm and has faced multiple lawsuits.

In response, the San Francisco-based manufacturer has been working hard to win back public favor. To address the high usage rates among teenagers, Juul also announced an age-lock technology plan last month. This plan aims to launch a device with an age verification system that can only be unlocked by individuals aged 21 and older.
