Study: US Youth Smoking Falls as Vaping Rises

A study in Pediatrics found that between 2011 and 2018, teen smokers were smoking less often and on fewer days, while vaping use increased. Data came from the National Youth Tobacco Survey.
According to vapingpost, a recent study published in Pediatrics found that between 2011 and 2018, smoking frequency and the number of cigarettes smoked per day among youth smokers declined, while e-cigarette use increased.

Using data extracted from the 2011-2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS), researchers analyzed trends in smoking frequency, intensity, age of smoking initiation, and e-cigarette use frequency among current smokers. The analysis was also broken down by male and female students, middle school and high school students, and different racial groups.

The compiled data showed that between 2011 and 2018, smoking rates declined among current male and female students, high school students, non-Hispanic white students, and non-Hispanic smoking students. Overall, light smoking (≤5 cigarettes per day [CPDs]) increased, moderate smoking (6-10 CPDs) decreased, while trends in light, moderate, and heavy smoking varied across population groups.

The age of first smoking increased among female students, high school students, and non-Hispanic students, while it decreased among male students. In addition, the frequency of e-cigarette use increased between 2014 and 2018.

The study, titled “Trends in Smoking Behaviors Among US Adolescent Cigarette Smokers,” found that smoking behaviors showed an overall positive trend, with the only concerning finding being the rise in smoking rates among male students.

“From 2011 to 2018, current youth cigarette smokers reported fewer smoking days, fewer CPDs, and a higher age of smoking initiation. However, over time, male youth had higher smoking rates and began smoking at an earlier age. From 2014 to 2018, e-cigarette use increased.”
