UK: Vaping While Driving Could Lead to a Fine
In the UK, drivers could be fined if vapor from vaping obstructs their vision. While vaping while driving is not illegal itself, police may act if it affects safe control of the vehicle.
In the UK, drivers caught vaping while driving could face fines if the vapor obstructs their view, according to police.

Nick Lloyd, the road safety chief at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, explained that while vaping itself is not illegal, drivers found vaping may be prosecuted for not paying proper care and attention. “While there is currently no law against it, the trend of drivers choosing to vape while on the move is growing. If using a vape while driving leads to a collision, that activity is considered careless driving - which is illegal.”

He pointed out that vapor clouds can create visual obstructions similar to sunlight, potentially leading to fatal accidents. “Any secondary activity that takes your eyes off the road is potentially dangerous. If vapor clouds are produced, then smoking behind the wheel not only distracts physically but also creates visibility issues.”

Offenders could face fines, penalties, or driving bans.

If police find someone vaping and believe the vapor is affecting the driver's ability to drive safely, they could be fined £100 and receive 3 penalty points. In more serious cases or if contested in court, fines could reach up to £5,000, with 9 penalty points, or even a court-imposed driving ban.

Additionally, if they are involved in an accident caused by vapor, their insurance may not cover any damages or injuries sustained in the crash. Lloyd stated: “If using a vape while driving leads to a collision, that activity may be considered careless driving, which is illegal.”
