Pennsylvania Sues Juul for Misleading Consumers

Pennsylvania has joined the wave of legal action against Juul, accusing the company of misleading consumers as lawsuits from schools and public agencies continue to grow.
In recent months, Juul has faced multiple lawsuits from various organizations. The most recent one is a 40-page complaint filed in the San Diego Superior Court on behalf of the San Diego Unified School District, accusing the company of undermining the "learning environment" and contributing to increased student absenteeism due to electronic cigarette-related injuries.

Pennsylvania has now joined the list. Attorney General Shapiro accuses Juul of misleading the public and is attempting to ban all Juul products statewide, including tobacco-flavored products. If the court does not approve the total ban, the state will prohibit all flavored Juul products, menthol, and high-nicotine vaping products, except for those with tobacco flavor.

Shapiro stated, "Juul has deliberately targeted young people using tactics similar to those of tobacco companies. There is no evidence that these e-cigarettes are safe, and until that is established, we need to remove Juul products from the shelves and out of the hands of young people."

Loss of Credibility
Since merging with Altria, the San Francisco-based manufacturer has lost credibility as it essentially reduced harm.
In response to these accusations, Juul has maintained that it has never targeted teenagers. "While we have not reviewed the complaints, we remain committed to working with U.S. attorneys general, regulators, public health officials, and other stakeholders to combat underage use and convert adult smokers, thereby working to reset the vaping category in the U.S. and earn the trust of society," said Juul spokesperson Austin Finan in a statement.

Since merging with Altria, the San Francisco-based manufacturer has lost credibility due to its core role in harm reduction and has since been making every effort to persuade the FDA and the public that its core mission is to prevent youth from using e-cigarettes.

New Technology to Prevent Youth Smoking
To this end, last summer, it launched a new product that helps monitor users by collecting information on when and where they vape. The device is also capable of using facial recognition to keep it under the control of children.

Juul is expected to present this product to the FDA by May 12 and plans to submit over 250,000 pages of content, including scientific research, marketing materials, and its strategies to prevent and curb illegal use.

In Canada and the UK, Juul devices already have the capability to connect to an app that verifies age and tracks nicotine consumption. Although U.S. devices will be age-locked, they will not be able to track nicotine consumption.
