US Democrats Write to FDA Criticizing Flavor Ban

US Democrats criticized the FDA’s newly announced flavored vape policy, calling it a weak reversal that may do little to curb youth vaping and could leave millions of children at risk of nicotine addiction.
The U.S. Democrats wrote in a letter to the FDA: "The newly announced e-cigarette flavor policy is a shocking reversal of the commitments made by government authorities; it is weak and unlikely to have a significant impact on youth vaping."

The letter states that these omissions will put millions of children at risk of addiction.
In the first week of January, the agency released the long-awaited guidelines regarding e-cigarette products. "Companies that do not stop the production, distribution, and sale of unauthorized flavored e-cigarettes (except tobacco or menthol) within 30 days may face enforcement actions from the FDA," the letter stated.

Fortunately, canister-based vaping devices are primarily sold in vape shops and are designed to cater to adult smokers, thus exempting them from the ban. However, the exclusion of menthol flavor from the ban has caused discontent among the aforementioned group of senior Democrats. They argue that these omissions will put millions of children at risk of addiction.

Urging the FDA to take further action
Senators in the letter called on Hahn to rescind the new policy and enforce Trump's previous commitment to ban all flavors. "As the newly confirmed FDA commissioner, you have the opportunity (and obligation) to take meaningful action to address the ongoing youth smoking crisis. The FDA's recently announced compliance policy fails to prioritize children, families, and public health in the face of industry opposition."
