Devon’s Largest Hospital in the UK Allows Vaping
Devon’s largest hospital, Derriford Hospital, now allows vaping on its grounds after reviewing Public Health England guidance. It will describe itself as smoke-free rather than vape-free.
Derriford Hospital banned all forms of smoking on its premises in 2016. However, following recommendations from Public Health England (PHE), which fully supports the use of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation, the hospital's health manager has now decided to allow vaping on hospital grounds.
To avoid any confusion, the hospital now refers to itself as “smoke-free” rather than “no smoking,” and plans to designate the external areas of the hospital as “vaping-friendly,” with signage indicating that vapers should avoid using their devices at entrances and bus stops.
“In any case, continuing to smoke is not good for your health compared to quitting altogether.”John Newton, Public Health England
