New York Passes Flavored Vape Ban, Effective July 2020

New York City passed a ban on flavored vaping products on November 26, covering all flavors except tobacco, with implementation set for July 2020.
On November 26 local time, the New York City Council voted 42 to 2 to pass a resolution banning flavored vaping products. The measure prohibits all flavored e-cigarette products except tobacco flavor, including fruit, mint, and candy-like vape flavors.

It is reported that New York Mayor Bill de Blasio will sign the bill or allow it to become law, which would make New York one of the major cities to ban all vape flavors other than tobacco.

According to the Associated Press, youth use of e-cigarettes has risen rapidly in recent years, and council members who support the bill said they are protecting young people who use vaping devices.

Democratic City Council member Mark Levine said there is no obligation more important than protecting children's health.

However, some residents are concerned that once flavored vaping products are banned, many people will return to traditional cigarettes.

After the ban was passed, vape supporters protested by throwing dollar bills from the chamber balcony.

According to reports, in stores in Manhattan, New York, flavored vaping products still account for 75% of business, even though owners have already reduced their inventory.

Under the new law, store owners may face fines of at least $1,000 for selling flavored vaping products.
Encouragingly, the flavored vape ban will take effect in New York City on July 1, 2020, giving industry operators an 8-month buffer period instead of taking effect on an “emergency” basis.
