UK Youth Urge Government to Ban Vaping in Schools

A youth council in London, Ontario is urging municipal, provincial, and federal governments to ban vaping in public schools, citing concerns about teen use and campus health.

A youth council in London is urging local, provincial, and federal governments to push for a ban on the use of e-cigarettes in public schools.

The Human Environments Analysis Laboratory Youth Advisory Council (HEALYAC), composed of 14 teenagers from London, Ontario, expressed their concerns about the rising popularity of e-cigarettes in the community in a proposal to a lab at Western University.

Council member Aliana Manji stated in a release on Thursday afternoon: “Vaping is a serious health issue facing youth, and we have developed a series of recommendations to address this complex public health problem.”

The recommendations put forth by the council are based on existing research and their own life experiences.

Another council member, Eleanor Park, said: “We believe that regulations need to be amended to introduce stricter market rules and implement new protections for anyone under 19 purchasing e-cigarette products online, including a ban on using e-cigarettes in schools.”

On Thursday evening, the Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU) will hold a youth meeting at its health board meeting.

Dr. Chris Mackie, the city’s medical officer of health and CEO of MLHU, said: “The excellent work done by HEALYAC is closely related to our efforts to address the vaping issue, but they are looking at the problem from the perspective of young people, and we look forward to hearing their opinions at the meeting. This is a great opportunity to collaborate with HEALYAC to develop and implement strategies created by youth for youth to tackle the vaping issue.”

HEALYAC stated that the convenient use of e-cigarette products makes all high school students susceptible to the health risks and unknown consequences associated with vaping.

Just weeks ago, MLHU reported Canada’s first case related to vaping.
