JUUL chief scientist Xing Chenyue returns to China to work in e-cigarettes

JUUL, a major US vaping brand, built a strong business around nicotine products. This article looks at chief scientist Xing Chenyue’s return to China to join the e-cigarette sector.
JUUL is a well-known e-cigarette brand in the United States. For a long time, selling nicotine-related products has been a good business model, and JUUL's products provide nicotine to consumers in the same way as traditional cigarettes. JUUL is now valued at $38 billion, making it the largest e-cigarette brand in the U.S., and The New Yorker even considers JUUL to be synonymous with "e-cigarette." Behind JUUL's series of successes is the significant contribution of Xing Chenyue: there, she invented nicotine salts.

Nicotine salts are the form of nicotine found in tobacco leaves. Unlike the nicotine typically used in e-liquids, these salts are not just nicotine; they are compounds that contain nicotine and other organic components. They may combine with one or more chemicals found in tobacco leaves, but the result is the same—forming a more stable molecule.

The form of nicotine typically used in e-liquids is called "freebase" nicotine. This form of nicotine is not attached to any other substances and is generally considered more desirable for vaporization and other uses because it is a "volatile" (i.e., easily evaporated) form of nicotine.

In fact, the tobacco industry has largely worked to increase the amount of "freebase" nicotine in cigarettes. This is a major factor contributing to the success of Marlboro cigarettes, as Philip Morris was a pioneer of this successful method.

The greatest significance of nicotine salts is that they solve the problem of nicotine delivery efficiency. Regular "freebase nicotine" e-liquids are not ideal for enhancing the blood nicotine input from e-cigarette devices, making it difficult for e-cigarette users to achieve the same satisfaction as smoking, and excessively high nicotine content only leads to throat irritation, with only a small portion reaching the bloodstream where there is a real need for nicotine within an effective time frame. High nicotine e-liquids also reduce the user experience of e-cigarettes due to excessive throat irritation.

Nicotine salts penetrate more effectively than "freebase nicotine," increasing the level of nicotine that can penetrate the bloodstream in the same time frame, thus providing a solution that closely resembles the absorption of true cigarette nicotine into the bloodstream without excessively irritating the throat. This is why products like JUUL, PHIX, and MT have gained significant recognition among smokers.

In China, e-cigarettes have become a hotbed for entrepreneurship, with over 4,000 registered companies and more than 8,000 e-liquid flavors. The Chinese invented e-cigarettes, and the best e-cigarette manufacturing processes are also in China. However, after interacting with some e-cigarette development teams in China over the past year, Xing Chenyue noticed that while the e-cigarette entrepreneurial wave is booming, there is a lack of scientific understanding and professional insight into e-cigarette research and development. Additionally, some e-cigarette products' non-standard production and marketing have led to misunderstandings among the public regarding such products. "Therefore, I decided to bring truly high-quality products, research standards, production specifications, and promotional concepts to the Chinese market."

This is the original intention behind her return to China to establish the e-cigarette brand "Xiwu."

Inspired by Xing Chenyue's entrepreneurial vision, Mystlabs currently boasts a very luxurious entrepreneurial team: angel investor Thomas Yao, who has invested in the largest shared mobility company in the U.S., Lime, and India's largest payment platform, Paytm; Daniel Chen, former general manager of TCL's smart applications division and executive at Hong Kong's first listed robotics company; Yu Liu, former president of Blackberry in China; and a design team from the world-renowned innovation design company IDEO.

Xing Chenyue stated that Mystlabs e-cigarettes will officially launch in July this year, scientifically creating vapor to bring truly professional e-cigarettes to smokers.
