Analysis of the Malaysian Vaping Market

Malaysia was once a major exporter of e-liquid during the cloud-chasing era. With pod systems taking over, both the local vaping market and product mix have changed significantly.

Malaysia was once a major exporter of e-liquid during the era of large vapor clouds, winning favor in the Asia-Pacific and some European and American markets with its fruity mixed flavors and cool sensations.

Since the popularity of small pod products, not only has the e-cigarette industry changed, but so has the market and product structure. So what changes have occurred in the Malaysian market during the era of "small pods"?

A Chinese e-cigarette industry practitioner recently embarked on a trip to Malaysia and shared his observations from the past few days.

The e-cigarette users in Malaysia are mainly composed of young people and those trying to quit smoking, with purchasing channels primarily being online e-commerce and offline physical stores.

Unlike in China, there are many physical stores in Malaysia, offering a wide variety of e-cigarette products and e-liquid flavors. Since users can personally experience the performance and taste of products in physical stores, purchasing from these stores is very popular among users.

The Malaysian market is currently undergoing a transformation, with fewer users of large vapor products, while small pods have become the mainstream product and continue to grow.

E-cigarettes are seen everywhere in Malaysia, from market vendors selling vegetables, young people selling fruits by the roadside, GRAB drivers, delivery personnel, hotel bellhops, to diners in restaurants... you can see many people vaping in any scenario.

Young users in Malaysia (over 20 years old) primarily use e-cigarettes because they are more "novel" and "cool," while middle-aged users mainly use them to quit smoking. The taste of e-cigarettes is not as unpleasant as traditional cigarettes, and the smell dissipates quickly when used indoors, not affecting others.

There are many small pod brands, but generally speaking, the "NANOSTICK" and "RELX" brands are more popular and have a higher market share.

Typically, consumers prefer to purchase small pods through micro-businesses and online sales channels.

On the other hand, due to the unique taste preferences of Malaysian e-cigarette consumers, products using locally sourced e-liquids are often more readily accepted. Locals prefer mixed fruit flavors with a cool sensation and a higher sweetness level.

Therefore, whether a product can succeed in Malaysia largely depends on the user's taste experience and how to lock in users to increase repurchase rates.

Currently, some e-liquid products in Malaysia are also starting to offer different versions like "light" and "classic" to cater to different user taste preferences, reflecting that in the face of fierce competition, user segmentation and product differentiation are becoming trends in future brand competition.

Additionally, Malaysia has strict anti-smoking regulations, establishing many no-smoking areas. However, nicotine-free vaping devices can be used in these areas, indicating that Malaysia currently has a friendly attitude towards e-cigarettes, and the prospects for the Malaysian e-cigarette market are promising.
