According to the International News Agency, the EU has imposed sanctions on Belarusian tobacco companies Neman Grodno and Inter Tobako. These measures were announced in the EU's official gazette as part of broader sanctions aimed at punishing actions related to the war in Ukraine.
This package also targets Russian oil exports, financial institutions, and automobile manufacturers whose trucks and cars have been used for "special military operations."

The Neman Grodno tobacco factory has already been sanctioned following the controversial re-election of Alexander Lukashenko and the subsequent protests challenging the election results in 2020.
Neman accounts for 70% of domestic cigarette sales, effectively monopolizing the Belarusian tobacco market. The U.S. has stated that it is one of several entities receiving favorable treatment from the regime in exchange for providing funding to Lukashenko.
The Neman factory has also been accused of being a major source of illegal cigarettes in Europe. It is believed that about 10% of the 5.5 billion illegal cigarettes sold in the UK each year originate from Belarus.
The average price of a pack of cigarettes in Belarus is about $0.80, while in Latvia it is $4.30, and much higher in other EU regions, creating a significant profit margin for smuggling.
