Macau Health Bureau Director Lo Iek Long said the Macao SAR government is considering amendments to the Smoking Prevention and Control Law to include more outdoor smoke-free areas, such as entrances to kindergartens and schools. According to multiple local media reports, the Macao SAR government also plans to establish smoke-free zones in large public spaces such as public squares and streets, with smoking allowed only in designated areas.

This year, the possibility of tightening smoking regulations has been a hot topic of discussion. In January, the possibility of banning smoking while walking was raised. Last month, TDM (the local television station) interviewed tourists and local residents, who generally agreed that the behavior is socially unacceptable and were concerned that it could harm health.

However, officials have delayed taking further action, saying the issue is complex. The Macau General Union of Neighborhood Associations also acknowledged receiving many complaints and concerns about pedestrians smoking, but admitted that enforcing such a ban would be very difficult.

The Health Bureau said that half of the smoking violations recorded in 2024 were committed by tourists!
