Washington State Renews Push to Ban Flavored Tobacco

Washington state lawmakers are renewing efforts to ban flavored tobacco products, citing concerns about youth addiction and targeted marketing by tobacco companies. Supporters, including Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards, argue that flavors such as menthol and fruit are especially appealing to minors, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 80% of young smokers prefer flavored tobacco.

Supporters say the ban is critical to reducing vaping addiction and protecting public health. State Superintendent Chris Reykdal said, “These industries are creating lifelong customers.” Advocacy groups such as “Flavors Hook Kids” support the proposal, which follows a temporary ban imposed during the 2019 surge in vaping-related lung injuries that prohibited the sale of flavored vaping products.

However, small business owners warn that it would hurt the economy. Chris Ward, owner of Torch Vape Shop, said flavored products account for 90% of his sales. “If this ban passes, my business will go under,” he said, calling the legislation hypocritical compared with the tolerance shown toward other harmful industries.

The bill failed to pass in previous sessions, but it may gain support when the legislative session begins on January 13. Lawmakers say it is time to put public health ahead of profits and view the ban as a necessary step to protect Washington state’s youth.
