UK Government Announces Disposable Vape Ban, Timeline Yet to Be Confirmed

Key Point: The UK government has announced a ban on disposable vapes and restrictions on flavors for refillable vaping devices. The implementation date has not yet been confirmed. Once finalized, retailers will have a six-month transition period.

The UK government has announced a ban on the sale of disposable vaping devices and restrictions on flavors for refillable vaping devices. The implementation date of the legislation has not yet been confirmed. Once the timeline is finalized, retailers will have a six-month transition period to adapt to the change.

According to a BBC report on January 29, the UK government said that, in order to address the growing problem of youth vaping, it will ban the sale of disposable vaping devices in the UK.

The report said that although the implementation date has not yet been specified, the government plans to enforce the ban through existing environmental protection regulations. Once the timeline is confirmed, retailers will have six months to adjust to the change.

For refillable vaping devices, the government will strengthen measures to prevent the sale of refillable products marketed with child-appealing flavors and will require simpler, less attractive packaging. In addition, stores will be required to place refillable vaping devices out of children’s sight and away from other products that may encourage purchases, such as candy. The government said it will conduct further public consultations to determine which flavors should be banned and how refillable vaping devices should be sold.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak explained the plan in detail during a school visit on Monday. In a statement, he said: “As any parent or teacher who cares about children growing up knows, one of the most worrying trends right now is the rise in children vaping, and so we must act before it becomes endemic.”

This decision follows last year’s proposal to ban cigarette sales to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, as part of the goal of creating a “smoke-free generation.” Although the sale of vaping devices to individuals under 18 is already prohibited, the government stressed that disposable vaping devices, which are often sold in smaller and more appealing packaging, are one of the key factors driving the sharp rise in youth smoking and vaping.

Eve Peters, Director of Government Affairs for LOST MARY in the UK, said the company supports the government’s intention to prevent children from using vaping devices, but is disappointed by a blanket ban.
