Scottish Lawmakers Discuss Youth Vaping, Labour Representative Calls for Stronger Controls
Scottish lawmakers are calling for a ban on the sale of disposable e-cigarettes that appeal to youth, arguing that these products are carefully marketed and flavored to attract young people, impacting adolescent health.
According to reports from UK media, at a meeting of the Renfrewshire Community and Housing Policy Committee in Scotland, representatives discussed a reflection document on how the UK government and devolved administrations are responding to smoking and youth smoking behaviors.
Labour's education spokesperson, MP Gillian Graham, stated: "In my view, the packaging and flavors of e-cigarettes are intentionally designed to be appealing to young people. Flavors like bubblegum, light colors, and blueberry are all tactics to attract youth."
She mentioned that e-cigarettes are prominently displayed in supermarkets and small corner shops. She emphasized, "Some students are using disposable e-cigarettes daily, which is equivalent to consuming the nicotine of 20 cigarettes. This is the amount of nicotine in their systems, making it extremely addictive. Students are vaping around schools, and our evidence shows that disposable e-cigarette waste is littered around school areas."
She opposes youth vaping during school breaks, stating, "They are already addicted, and the sooner we ban these products, the better. The display of e-cigarettes should be treated like traditional tobacco products, and it is always better to ban them sooner rather than later."
According to reports from her department, complaints about children's access to and use of disposable e-cigarettes are on the rise.
"Current penalties have not effectively deterred the sale of these products," the department stated in response to consultations.
Emma Rodden, the SNP's education spokesperson and representative for Johnston North and surrounding villages, stated: "As someone who has been smoke-free for 8 months and is very proud of it, I absolutely understand the value of e-cigarettes. I am now using e-cigarettes, and I understand that they have been developed as a smoking cessation tool since their inception."
