Göttingen customs seized 3,447 untaxed e-cigarettes, and the merchant was prosecuted for unpaid taxes exceeding 1,100 euros, which may reveal untaxed issues in the tobacco industry.
According to reports from German media, Göttingen customs discovered and confiscated 3,447 untaxed disposable e-cigarettes during an inspection.
Göttingen customs stated that this batch of e-cigarettes was found on January 9 of this year at a merchant dealing in tobacco and tobacco alternatives.
As a commercial importer of tobacco and its alternatives (including the e-liquid contained in e-cigarettes), this merchant was required by Göttingen customs to conduct an annual inventory check, but he failed to comply with this requirement. Therefore, customs decided to conduct an inspection.
During the inspection, customs officials discovered 3,447 e-cigarettes, each containing two milliliters of e-liquid. During the inspection, customs officials found that the packaging of these disposable e-cigarettes lacked the necessary tax markings. The e-liquid in these e-cigarettes should have paid a total of 1,103.04 euros in tobacco tax. Consequently, customs officials seized these goods and issued a tax notification, while also initiating a lawsuit against the merchant for suspected tax evasion.
