UK Local Councillor Warns of Vaping Threat, Calls for Legal Action to Protect Children
UK local councillor Esther Gray is concerned that vape shops are attracting young people to smoking and leading to nicotine addiction. He calls for legislation to sever the link between candy and vaping to prevent children from becoming addicted.
According to a report by the UK local media Bromsgrove Standard on October 25, during a full council meeting in Bromsgrove, UK, Councillor Esther Gray expressed worries that vape shops are enticing young people to smoke, leading to nicotine addiction. He emphasized the need for legislation to prevent the association between candy and vaping to protect children from addiction.
He believes that if young people are attracted to these brightly colored candy shops on their way to and from school, they will be unable to resist vaping. These shops create a dangerous connection in children's minds by associating vaping with the temptation of candy, leading them to believe that vaping is harmless. He stressed the need for legislation to sever the link between candy and vaping to prevent a generation of children from becoming addicted and facing health issues.
Nationwide, trading standards departments are aware of the issue of shops potentially selling vapes to underage children and frequently conduct research and mystery shopper operations to investigate which shops comply with regulations.
The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) recently released data from the Joseph initiative, which involved mystery shopping at vape retailers, including convenience stores, to combat illegal vaping and underage sales. In 1,199 mystery shops, 27.3% of shops were found to be selling vapes to individuals under 18.
Recently, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced his government's plan regarding smoking and vaping in the UK to reduce young people's engagement in this harmful habit. He is considering a complete ban on disposable vapes and hopes to raise the legal purchasing age for tobacco by one year each year, meaning that anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, will never reach the legal age to purchase cigarettes.
The Local Government Association will also consult the government on various measures to reduce young people's exposure to vaping, including flavor restrictions, preventing them from seeing and accessing other child-targeted products in stores, and regulating packaging and branding.
