On October 24, regulators in Sonoma County, California voted to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products in unincorporated areas, a move aimed at protecting the health and safety of young people.

According to an official announcement from the Sonoma County Administrator’s Office in California, the county’s regulators voted on October 24 to prohibit, effective immediately, the sale of flavored tobacco products in the county’s unincorporated areas.

The amendment to the tobacco retail ordinance was made in response to public health data in order to protect local minors. The data shows that the use of flavored tobacco products is increasing among high school-age teenagers.

Data from the California Healthy Kids Survey shows that 46% of 11th-grade students in Sonoma County said they had used e-cigarettes, and 76% said it was “fairly easy” or “very easy” to obtain e-cigarettes.

According to medical research, these e-cigarettes may lead to serious health problems. A 2022 scientific statement from the American Heart Association outlined negative effects on the human body, including issues involving lung and cardiovascular function, brain health and addiction, mental health, and sleep health.

In fact, since 2022, California law has prohibited the sale of most flavored tobacco products, while local jurisdictions such as Sonoma County have adopted even stricter legal and policy measures to limit tobacco flavors. For example, California’s statewide law does not cover online purchases of flavored tobacco products, while Sonoma County has strengthened oversight of local e-cigarette retailers. The new ordinance imposes strict restrictions on online sales through apps as well as in-store displays.

At present, Sonoma County has 79 licensed tobacco retailers, accounting for 23% of all tobacco retailers in the county.
