The Australian Medical Association supports comprehensive legal reforms for electronic cigarettes, which will end the retail sale of electronic cigarettes in Australia and help people quit this dangerous and addictive habit.
According to news from the Australian Medical Association's official website on September 22, the Australian Medical Association supports comprehensive legal reforms for electronic cigarettes, which will end the retail sale of electronic cigarettes in Australia and help people quit this dangerous and addictive habit.
According to the reforms proposed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the import, manufacture, and sale of electronic cigarette products (regardless of nicotine content) will be prohibited outside of therapeutic use prescribed by doctors and dispensed by pharmacists.
In documents submitted to the TGA, the AMA expressed support for the proposed reforms, which include using ordinary medicine packaging with warning labels for electronic cigarette products.
AMA President Professor Steve ROBSon praised the TGA for utilizing expert advice in medical, public health, and scientific fields to guide the reforms. He also commended the government for introducing new reform measures to Parliament this month, considering it a significant step in combating tobacco and nicotine addiction.
The reforms will include legislative changes to allow federal, state, and territory governments to enforce the new rules through criminal offenses, civil penalties, and improved information sharing. The TGA's reforms include many long-standing AMA proposals, including restrictions on the flavors and quantities of nicotine that can be prescribed or ordered, as well as ending personal imports.
