Australia’s Bayside Council Urges State Government to Legislate Against Vape Sales

Key point: Bayside Council has called on the Victorian government to introduce stronger legislation to block the sale of vaping products.

Bayside City Council is urging the Victorian State Government to legislate against the sale of e-cigarettes.

According to news from the Bayside City Council's official website on September 6, the council is calling for stronger regulations from the Victorian State Government to prevent the sale of e-cigarettes.

The council believes that the potential health impacts of e-cigarettes are well-known, as the liquids in these products contain over 200 chemicals, some of which are carcinogenic. It is illegal for stores to sell nicotine-containing e-cigarettes without a doctor's prescription.

Bayside Mayor Cr. Hanna El Mouallem has written to the Victorian Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, Mary Anne Thomas, sharing his concerns on this issue.

Under the Tobacco Act of 1987, the council is obligated to ensure that operators comply with relevant requirements, including product display, mandatory signage, and not selling products to minors. The council will continue to monitor the locations selling e-cigarettes to ensure compliance with the Tobacco Act of 1987.
