Breaking news: According to c-store, after months of investigation, Australian police recently executed multiple search warrants at 15 homes, shops, and commercial premises in Logan, Redlands, and Ipswich in southeast Queensland.

More than 150 law enforcement officers took part in the operation, seizing over AUD 835,000 in cash, more than 8 million cigarettes, about 3.74 tons of loose tobacco worth more than AUD 14 million, 60,000 vaping devices worth about AUD 1.8 million, and 6 vehicles.

These investigations and subsequent seizures resulted in a 37-year-old man being charged with 58 offenses. After the seizure, five trucks were needed to transport the cigarettes, loose tobacco, vaping devices, and other items.

The Crime and Corruption Commission of Queensland (CCC) began investigating the man as part of a money laundering operation, but during the investigation found evidence suggesting he was involved in distributing and selling illegal cigarettes and vaping products to retail stores across Queensland.

Queensland CCC Chairman Bruce Barbour said organized crime infiltrates various industries in order to make huge profits from illegal activities.

“For years, extensive documentation has shown that criminal groups have infiltrated and become involved in other industries, and it is concerning to see evidence of criminal activity emerging in the cigarette and vaping industry.”

This multi-agency response involved officials from the CCC, Queensland Police Service (QPS), Australian Taxation Office (ATO), Queensland Health, Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), and Australian Border Force (ABF).

Russell Joyce of the Queensland Police Service’s Major and Organized Crime Investigation Branch said cooperation among agencies was critical to dismantling the alleged criminal syndicate.

“A unified investigation can remove illegal products from the streets and bring suspected offenders before the courts.”
