Indonesia’s Parliament Officially Brings E-Cigarette Products Under Legal Framework

The Indonesian Parliament (DPR) recently passed the Health Law No. 17 of 2023. This law is seen as providing legal certainty for the e-cigarette industry, categorizing e-cigarettes as addictive substances.
According to Indonesian media Viva on August 31, the DPR has passed the Health Law No. 17 of 2023, which is viewed as providing legal certainty for the e-cigarette industry, categorizing e-cigarettes as addictive substances.
Teguh Basuki A Wibowo, chairman of the Indonesian Electronic Nicotine Industry Association (APPNINDO), stated that including e-cigarettes as solid and liquid tobacco products under the law not only legalizes the industry participants but also helps Indonesian smokers find alternatives.
Teguh explained that this law also provides the public with more freedom of choice, allowing them to identify alternative products under legal protection.
"We look forward to the government developing science-based policies related to the e-cigarette industry in the future."
He further stated that this law puts Indonesia on par with other countries that also have legal frameworks regarding e-cigarettes, such as the Philippines and the UK, which regulate the circulation and quality of e-cigarettes for adult consumption only.
