Altria Reaches Another School District Settlement, to Pay $3.2 Million

The Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) in Arizona announced a settlement with Altria, which will receive $3.2 million in settlement funds. Previously, the district had reached a settlement of about $10 million with JUUL, and both settlements are part of the same class action lawsuit.

On August 24, the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) announced a settlement with Altria, which will receive $3.2 million in settlement funds. Previously, the district had reached a settlement of about $10 million with Juul, and both settlements are part of the same class action lawsuit. 

TUSD President Dr. Ravi Shah stated:

“Our staff spent a significant amount of time providing testimony, data, and other work that demonstrated the impact of Juul and Altria... and their effects on our district.” 

The district will begin receiving this amount by the end of this year and will continue to receive the remaining settlement funds over the next few years. The district's attorneys will receive 25% of the settlement amount. After deductions, the district will have approximately $10.3 million remaining from these two settlements. 

Ravi hopes that every penny of this money will be used to help prevent and treat addiction issues among our students, as well as to meet their mental health needs. He stated that the district already has plans in place to assist students, but the additional funding will further aid them.

Previously, Altria Group stated it would pay $235 million to resolve at least 6,000 lawsuits.
