Latest UK survey says 43% of cigarette smokers still misunderstand e-cigarettes

Key takeaway: According to the latest data from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), a large proportion of smokers still misunderstand e-cigarettes, believing they are as harmful as conventional cigarettes or even worse.
According to the latest survey data from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) in the UK, a significant portion of smokers misunderstand e-cigarettes, believing they are as harmful as traditional cigarettes, or even more so.

The data shows that "among the 1.8 million smokers in the UK who have not tried e-cigarettes, 43% believe that e-cigarettes are as harmful as or more harmful than traditional cigarettes, up from 27% in 2019." The report also indicates that "among the 2.9 million smokers who have tried e-cigarettes but stopped, 44% believe that e-cigarettes are as harmful as or more harmful than traditional cigarettes, an increase from 25% in 2019."
Due to the high level of misunderstanding, ASH believes that the UK's smoking cessation efforts are "threatened by the growing concerns among smokers that the risks of e-cigarettes are the same as or higher than those of traditional cigarettes."
"The government supports e-cigarette strategies as a means to reduce smoking rates, but if smokers refrain from trying e-cigarettes or stop using them prematurely due to safety concerns, this approach will be undermined," said ASH Deputy CEO Hazel Cheeseman. "The UK government must act swiftly to raise public awareness and help them understand that the risks associated with e-cigarettes are only a fraction of those of smoking."
Organizations such as the Independent European Vape Alliance (IEVA) and the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) support ASH's call for government action.
UKVIA Director General John Dunne stated, "It is clear that smokers lack understanding of the relative risks of smoking and e-cigarettes, which is a public health issue that the government can no longer ignore. ASH's report highlights that misleading and inaccurate headlines about e-cigarettes in the media have had a significant impact on public perception, hindering smokers from switching to less harmful alternatives."
"The public needs to know that many of the horror stories frequently reported in the media are simply not true, and we urgently need an antidote to this highly damaging misinformation."
"The industry is not allowed to make health claims about the relative harms of smoking and e-cigarettes, but leaving the public in the dark means that hundreds of smokers in the UK continue to die unnecessarily every day because they lack the relevant information. We must be allowed to clarify the facts, and the UK government should launch a nationwide public awareness campaign to accurately convey the relative risks of smoking and e-cigarettes."
