UK retail media has reported that UK e-cigarette retailer Vape Club has obtained information indicating that the UK is working hard to stop a large influx of illegal e-cigarettes. Since 2022, 2 million illegal e-cigarettes have been seized. The number of illegal e-cigarettes seized in the first four months of 2023 is seven times the total seized in 2021. According to data from 2023, the number of illegal e-cigarettes seized has already surpassed the number of counterfeit cigarettes by more than double.
This data was recently obtained by Vape Club through a freedom of information request. The illegal e-cigarettes mentioned include products that do not comply with UK regulations and have not been properly tested for safety, as well as counterfeit products of popular brands.
Reports indicate that counterfeit e-cigarettes have become a significant issue facing the UK e-cigarette market, with the most severe regions being in England. Since 2021, London, the Southeast, and the Northwest have consistently ranked among the top three regions for counterfeit e-cigarette seizures, with the busiest borders in the UK seeing the highest volume of illegal e-cigarette imports.
Dan Marchant, director of e-cigarette retailer Vape Club, stated that responsible industry practitioners are actually pleading with authorities to enforce relevant regulations and take strict action against non-compliant businesses. This includes obtaining licenses for appropriate age verification testing for each retailer and imposing higher fines on violators. The UKVIA (UK Vaping Industry Association) is calling for fines to be raised to at least £10,000, which would provide a real deterrent.
