Recent claims by health advocates attributing the increase in youth vaping to flavored e-cigarettes are unfounded and lack proper context. The real issue is the lack of enforcement against illegal trade and individuals purchasing products for minors. There is a direct correlation between the rise in e-cigarette adoption and the sharp decline in smoking rates.

Surveys consistently find that young people vape primarily out of curiosity, for nicotine, and to cope with stress and anxiety. This may explain why there is no data supporting that flavor bans effectively reduce youth vaping rates. Any data suggesting that flavor bans might be effective is entirely based on theoretical surveys.

The Canadian Vaping Association (CVA) and similar organizations continue to educate elected officials about the benefits of smoking alternatives for smokers and support for small businesses. The CVA welcomes meaningful direct dialogue with health organizations to develop common-sense policies that protect youth and the health outcomes of millions of Canadian smokers.

"CVA maintains its position that flavors are not the reason young people vape. The issue lies in the sale of vaping products to minors through the black market and straw purchases. The industry has taken proactive measures to implement strict age verification for our members and actively collaborates with law enforcement to prevent such sales."

"I will reach out to all health advocacy groups and invite them to form a working group. Our intention is to work together to address these complex issues and find practical solutions," said Darryl Tempest, CVA's government relations advisor. Canadians deserve to have all stakeholders work together to improve public health.

The health and well-being of our youth is paramount. However, many health organizations fail to adequately weigh the impact of these policies on the health of adult smokers. The CVA firmly believes that policies must be evidence-based and consider the interests of all stakeholders.

The CVA encourages health organizations to collaborate with industry leaders and regulators to find common-sense policies that protect our youth while supporting adults in their struggle with nicotine addiction. The CVA remains committed to engaging in meaningful dialogue and finding solutions that work for all Canadians.
