Modern Oral Nicotine Pouches Launched in Sweden, Reducing Burning and Irritation

Today, on April 15, it was reported that modern oral nicotine pouches have been launched in Sweden.

According to a press release, Stingfree technology reduces the burning and irritation typically associated with regular snuff and oral nicotine products. Several e-commerce distributors and stores are now selling the first products from the upcoming tobacco-free nicotine pouch series, which will feature different flavors and strengths.

Several studies have shown that many oral tobacco users experience damage and changes to their gums, especially in areas where small pouches come into direct contact with the gums.

The US/EU patented Stingfree technology aims to offset this and related burning/irritation by placing an impermeable barrier on the gum side of the small pouch. A significant proportion of snuff users dislike the stinging/burning and irritation when using nicotine pouches and snuff.

This was identified in a comprehensive survey conducted by Sting Free AB in 2022, which included over 1,000 Swedish oral tobacco users (nearly 40% of whom were women). Among the respondents, 67% of women and 53% of men found the stinging, burning sensation unpleasant whenever it occurred.

A recent survey of American women investigated why the proportion of women using nicotine pouches and snuff is much lower than that of men. One major factor derived from the responses was the burning sensation and oral irritation caused by these products, with comments such as irritation, burning, and hurting my gums. Other factors included negative stereotypes about smokeless users, the fatal misconception that smokeless products are more dangerous than e-cigarettes and smoking, and unfamiliarity with the delivery method.

Sting Free AB envisions that Stingfree technology will become the new industry standard for nicotine pouches and traditional smokeless tobacco products like snuff, with future customers being asked whether they prefer regular or sting-free when purchasing such products. The company also hopes that this technology will help more smokers choose to quit and switch to much less harmful nicotine pouches.
