Smoking Declines Among Young People in Denmark as Use of Snus, Nicotine Pouches and E-Cigarettes Ris

Today, according to The Local Denmark, the consumption of cigarettes among young people in Denmark has declined, while the use of nicotine products has increased.

Snus, nicotine pouches, and e-cigarettes are becoming increasingly popular among young people in Denmark, with 35.1% of individuals aged 15 to 29 using these products daily or regularly, up from 26.3% in 2020.

According to a study conducted by the Danish National Institute of Public Health and the University of Southern Denmark on behalf of the Danish Health Authority, the smoking rate has decreased from 20.1% to 19%, while the use of smokeless nicotine products has increased from 9.1% to 12.9%.

"We also found that particularly new products, such as e-cigarette devices and smokeless nicotine products, seem to be especially popular among very young people," said Nanna Jarlstrup, one of the researchers involved in the report. "This is naturally concerning."

"Unfortunately, we are also seeing an increase in the use of some illegal products. For example, the new disposable e-cigarette PUFF Bars," Jarlstrup said.

"It is illegal to sell them in Denmark, but we can see that young people are using them because they are available to them," she said.

Despite a decrease in the number of individuals aged 18 to 24 who smoke daily or occasionally compared to 2020, there has been an increase in the number of smokers aged 15 to 17.

Denmark has banned smoking in schools and during continuing education, removed cigarettes from store displays, and raised the price of a pack of cigarettes to help reduce smoking.
