Juul statement: Settlements reached with 40 states and territories, with hundreds of millions in com
Today, on April 11, news reports indicate that JUUL LABS has released a statement regarding a settlement reached with the Attorney General of West Virginia. The following is the full text:
The settlement with the Attorney General of West Virginia represents another step in Juul Labs' ongoing commitment to addressing the company's past issues. The terms of the agreement, like previous settlements, provide financial resources to further combat underage use and develop cessation programs, reflecting our current business practices that are part of the restructuring we implemented company-wide in the fall of 2019.
West Virginia is the state with the highest smoking rate in the U.S., and we hope to allocate some of the funds directly to intervention measures to reduce combustible cigarette use and improve public health in the state.
We have now reached settlements with 40 states and territories, providing hundreds of millions to participating states. This is an addition to our global resolution of private litigation in the U.S., covering over 5,000 cases filed by approximately 10,000 plaintiffs.
As we approach the conclusion of resolving the company's past settlements, Juul Labs remains focused on a path forward to ensure its future and fulfill its mission to help adult smokers switch from combustible cigarettes—the leading cause of preventable death—while combating underage use.
