According to foreign media reports today, Belfast City Council in Northern Ireland is considering banning anyone under the age of 18 from using e-cigarettes in venues and premises around the city.

According to Belfast Live today, UUP councillor John Kyle has submitted a motion that will be debated by the full council next week, calling on Belfast City Council to convene a working group with other stakeholders to consider measures to strengthen existing legislation and enforcement related to vaping.

The motion also calls for banning all under-18s from using e-cigarettes inside all City Hall buildings.

At a recent meeting of the council’s Standards and Business Committee, Councillor Kyle said: Part of the purpose of this motion is that people, especially parents of young people, are not aware of the dangers of vaping. It has become a common practice among children in schools.

“Part of the aim is to publicize this issue and make people aware of it, so I suggest it first be brought before the full council and then referred to committee for consideration to address the issue. If we as a council can make some room to address this growing public health problem, that would be beneficial.”
