The new GSTHR briefing reveals a series of new data, including some surveys from Europe in 2021. This figure is based on feasible surveys of e-cigarette prevalence in 49 countries.

To address the issue of missing data, GSTHR used a method to estimate the number of e-cigarettes in countries without information, assuming they are similar to countries with data points in the same region and economic conditions.

This estimate considered three factors—sales regulation status, World Health Organization regions, and World Bank income groups—and data from Euromonitor on the market size of e-cigarette products from 2015 to 2021.

GSTHR data scientist Tomasz Jerzynski stated: "In addition to the significant increase in the number of global e-cigarette users, our research shows that the use of nicotine e-cigarette products is also rapidly increasing in some countries in Europe and North America." "This growth is particularly notable as these products have only been on the market for about ten years in most markets."

In fact, although the GSTHR database shows that 36 countries/regions, including India, Japan, Egypt, Brazil, and Turkey, prohibit the use of nicotine e-cigarette products, the number of global e-cigarette users continues to rise.

New data also shows that the United States is the largest e-cigarette market, valued at $10.3 billion, followed by Western Europe ($6.6 billion), Asia-Pacific ($4.4 billion), and Eastern Europe ($1.6 billion).

Gerry Stimson, Director of KAC and Emeritus Professor at Imperial College London, stated: "As the latest data from the Global Tobacco Harm Reduction Organization (GSTHR) shows, consumers find nicotine e-cigarette products very appealing and are increasingly using them worldwide."
