Several tobacco companies jointly pay $100 million to settle 400 lawsuits

In the early hours of February 26, Beijing time, Motley Rice LLC, a law firm representing the interests of some plaintiffs, announced on Wednesday that cigarette manufacturers Altria Group, Reynolds American Inc., and Lorillard had paid US$100 million to settle 400 related lawsuits in Florida.

These lawsuits are collectively known as the Engle cases. They originated from a 2006 Florida Supreme Court ruling that made it easier for individuals to sue tobacco companies over health-related harm.
