According to today's report from Australia's Sydney Morning Herald, the current number of teenage smokers in Australia is at a historic low.

Latest data from New South Wales shows that the number of teenage smokers aged 12 to 18 in Australia has decreased by over 70% in the past 20 years. In the 1990s, the age at which people first smoked in the country was as young as 14, but it has now risen to 16. In 2014, only 6.7% of Australian teenagers smoked, compared to 23.5% two decades ago. This is attributed to the effectiveness of the revised plain packaging laws, price increase policies, and smoking cessation education.

The Australian government also revealed that it will expand smoke-free areas nationwide this year.
