Are E-Cigarettes Really the Best Choice for Quitting Smoking?

At the end of 2018, the e-cigarette industry exploded in popularity, and for a time, vaping products were promoted by all kinds of brands as a “magic tool for quitting smoking” that could effectively replace traditional tobacco and relieve nicotine cravings. But behind the overheated market, it is worth thinking calmly: are e-cigarettes really the best choice for quitting smoking?

At present, the vaping industry is one of the few major new entrepreneurial hot spots. Capital has poured in from all directions, which has also led to widespread disorder within the industry. The logic of most brands is to use the so-called throat hit, craving relief, and chemically blended flavors to replace the experience of traditional tobacco, thereby increasing user numbers and loyalty and capturing a share of the traditional tobacco market. But from the consumer’s point of view, is the throat hit that most brands emphasize really the most important indicator for quitting smoking?

“Throat hit” is a concept that brands have forcefully implanted into consumers’ minds. It is essentially a form of consumer indoctrination. Even when it comes to traditional tobacco, whether for heavy or light smokers, what people care more about is a smooth, mellow experience. Higher-priced traditional tobacco is generally smoother and lighter than ordinary cigarettes, offering a more comfortable and refined taste. The same is true in the vaping industry: “throat hit” represents the irritation and harm that the vape liquid ingredients cause to the throat and respiratory tract. Blindly pursuing a strong throat hit will inevitably deprive consumers of long-term, high-value enjoyment. What consumers truly expect is a non-irritating, low-burden vaping experience.

Many vaping brands sell their products under the banner of “quitting smoking,” but even if traditional smokers switch to vaping products, they are often just replacing one addictive product with another. On the other side of giving up traditional tobacco is becoming addicted to e-cigarettes. Most vape liquids on the market contain nicotine salt concentrations of around 3% to 5%. Even without examining how many brands mislabel their nicotine salt levels, this concentration is enough to make consumers dependent. Large intake of nicotine salts can cause side effects such as fatigue, mental fog, and weakness throughout the body. If teenagers accidentally use high-nicotine-salt vaping products, the harm to their health could be even greater.

Beyond nicotine salt dependence, consumers should have more ways to enjoy the experience. For example, appealing aromas and flavors that people genuinely enjoy, a real sense of fragrance, and a comfortable, smooth taste—all while minimizing the negative effects and maintaining a good overall experience.

National standards for e-cigarettes may be introduced as early as this year. For a vaping industry long criticized for “no product standards, no quality supervision, and no safety guarantees,” this would be an important step toward regulating the market. It is reported that the national standard will set detailed and specific requirements for product standards, technical requirements, various ingredients and content levels in vape liquid, packaging specifications, and more. It is foreseeable that brands with core technology will become mainstream, while the vaping industry and traditional tobacco industry will develop side by side, giving consumers more choices.
