What Are the Health Risks of E-Cigarettes?
The secondhand aerosol from e-cigarettes is still harmful to health, but the risks are significantly lower compared to traditional cigarettes. E-cigarettes do not contain tar, suspended particles, or other harmful components found in cigarettes, and manufacturers claim that e-cigarettes do not produce secondhand aerosol. However, some studies suggest that e-cigarettes still emit secondhand aerosol.
A study published by the Fraunhofer Wilhelm Klauditz Institute for Indoor Air examined human exposure to secondhand emissions from several e-cigarettes indoors. Each e-cigarette was puffed six times, and the data collected was compared to that of a traditional cigarette puffed six times.
Although the toxin levels produced by e-cigarettes in the air are lower than those from traditional cigarettes, the levels of acetic acid, acetone, isoprene, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde in the air are still quite high, averaging about 20% of what traditional cigarettes emit into the air.
Therefore, while e-cigarettes do not pollute the environment like traditional cigarettes, several important carcinogens and toxins can still be detected in the air.
No one should inhale these chemicals, whether they come from traditional or e-cigarettes. No one should smoke indoors without being exposed to other forms of tobacco smoke pollution.

Of course, I still oppose people smoking e-cigarettes in crowded public places where many non-smokers are present, especially those who smoke without regard for the potential secondhand aerosol harm; the large clouds of vapor can be quite bothersome.
