Does the IQOS e-cigarette contain nicotine? I’ve been smoking for a total of fifteen or sixteen years on and off. I quit once in 2011, but only lasted a year and a half before starting again. After that, I never tried to quit. I had basically given up on the idea of quitting, but some time ago I happened to come across IQOS. After doing a bit of research online and seeing that user feedback was pretty good, I bought one to try.

People online often call IQOS an e-cigarette, but personally I don’t think it should simply be grouped together as one, because its design principle is quite different from that of vaping devices—vaping devices deliver nicotine through atomization, while IQOS releases nicotine by heating tobacco with vapor. So what exactly is the difference between these two technologies?

Does the IQOS e-cigarette contain nicotine? Does the IQOS e-cigarette contain nicotine? More precisely, what’s called distillation here is actually “atomized” distillation: using a chemical method to vaporize the nicotine and aroma from tobacco. The aerosol produced this way contains far less tar than the tar released by burning traditional cigarettes, which is one reason many smokers have turned to vaping devices. Vapor heating, on the other hand, is a relatively new technology and one of IQOS’s biggest highlights. As the name suggests, it uses an electronic device to heat vapor, raising the temperature of the tobacco to the preset point at which nicotine is released, allowing aroma to be produced without open-flame combustion. In this way, it not only reduces tar output like traditional e-cigarettes, but also creates a warm inhalation sensation that feels closer to a real cigarette. For long-time smokers like me who are used to conventional cigarettes, that makes it much easier to accept.

So when I first started using it, I adapted pretty quickly. As I used IQOS more and more, I found that regular cigarettes no longer seemed as satisfying as before. That intense hit just wasn’t there anymore, and when I smoked too many regular cigarettes, I would get a greasy feeling in my mouth that was very unpleasant. I think this may be related to the tar content in tobacco. Traditional cigarettes contain a very high amount of tar, especially because incomplete combustion during smoking releases even more, and it’s hard to estimate how much. IQOS itself has relatively low tar content, and the flavor is richer and smoother, without the heavy tar taste of cigarettes. I’m quite satisfied with that. After all, the reason people want to quit traditional cigarettes is for the sake of “health,” and IQOS offers smokers a significant health advantage.
