<\/iframe><\/p> <p>A startup in San Francisco may soon help you kick the smoking habit for good. They are using high-tech to transform traditional nicotine patches.<\/p> <p>“550 Americans die every year from smoking,” said Guy Guidipirro, founder of Timing Therapeutics. “Ninety percent of lung cancer is caused by smoking, so we can really make a difference.”<\/p> <p>The biotech startup Timing Therapeutics in Hayward believes the device is key; you wear it like a transdermal nicotine patch, but it actually regulates doses with a small computer.<\/p> <p>“We combine smart drug delivery; we have timed nicotine delivery to address cravings for patients or consumers,” said Dr. Patrick Luann, senior vice president of R&D at Timing Therapeutics.<\/p> <p>Thus, people receive more nicotine when they need it and none when they don’t.<\/p> <p>“We have actually built a sensor into the device,” Dr. Luann said. It communicates with your smartphone. If you switch to a new patch or not, it knows.<\/p> <p>“You will get a message, or your family members will if you decide to take them on the journey, they will get a message saying, 'Hey, don’t forget to bring a new cartridge,'” Dr. Luann said.<\/p> <p>Investors and early trial results have impressed enough to raise $48 million for the project. The company now says they can move forward with large-scale trials starting next year.<\/p> <p>Meanwhile, testing continues. The skin is used to measure the transmission rate for various skin types.
