A vape shop in Vermont is facing fines over deceptive advertising. The vape shop owner is disputing the allegations made by the attorney general.

The owner of a vape shop in Castleton said he would shut down the business rather than pay the $50,000 civil penalty sought by the attorney general’s office.

Adam Tredwell, owner and president of Vermont Vapor, believes the claim that he violated consumer protection laws prohibiting unfair or deceptive acts and practices in commerce is baseless.

Tredwell provided VTDigger with a copy of a proposed settlement his attorney received from the attorney general’s office on February 1. It states that Vermont Vapor repeatedly made misleading or false claims about the benefits of using e-cigarettes on its website and Facebook page.

The attorney general’s office said Vermont Vapor displayed smoking cessation claims on its website, even though e-cigarettes have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a tool to help consumers quit smoking.
