As an important part of vaping devices, the atomizer plays an irreplaceable role. To extend its lifespan, it is necessary to understand how to clean a vape atomizer properly. So, how long does a vape atomizer last? China Vape News explains below.

How long a coil head can be used determines how long the vape atomizer can last. The lifespan of the coil head is one of the routine expenses for vape users aside from e-liquid. The lifespan of the coil determines the cost of using a vaping device, so this is not something you can always cut corners on. Most pre-made coil heads cost around 20 yuan. (Prices vary by brand and model, so please refer to the seller’s pricing.) Under normal circumstances, a pre-made coil head should last from 7 days to about half a month.

For RBA coils, lifespan varies greatly depending on each person’s habits. Some people like to replace them every day, or even after every tank of e-liquid, while others replace them every 3–5 days. Of course, there are also “lazy” users like the author who only replace them every half month or even once a month, thinking “as long as it still produces vapor, it’s fine,” and then feel alarmed when it finally comes time to change the coil.

Three major factors that seriously affect vape atomizer lifespan

Atomizers can generally be divided into two categories: “pre-made atomizers” and “RBA rebuildable atomizers.” The lifespan of the coil also differs depending on the type of atomizer. Whether it is a pre-made setup or an RBA build, coil lifespan is not fixed and will vary according to the user’s habits. So how long does a vape atomizer last? Even with the same atomizer and the same coil, some people may use it for half a month, while others may only get three days out of it. So what factors affect coil lifespan?

1. A major factor affecting vape atomizer lifespan: power. Every coil has a certain acceptable power range, which is usually marked on the coil housing. For example, 1.6Ω, 8-15W means the pre-made coil has a resistance of 1.6Ω and the officially recommended wattage range is 8W-15W. Users can find the draw and flavor they like best within this power range.

How long does a vape atomizer last? If the user sets the output power too high, the high temperature generated by the coil will over-vaporize the e-liquid, and the surrounding cotton will not absorb e-liquid quickly enough, causing the wick to burn and produce a burnt taste that affects both flavor and overall experience.

2. A major factor affecting vape atomizer lifespan: e-liquid. The biggest effect e-liquid has on coil life is “coil gunk” or carbon buildup. E-liquid is delivered through the cotton to the coil, and after the coil heats it, vapor is produced. At the same time, the high temperature also forms a black substance on the coil, commonly known as carbon buildup. Although the basic ingredients of e-liquid are generally similar, the raw materials and additives used by different brands vary, which leads to different rates of buildup. For example, “Malaysian e-liquid” is widely recognized as having a “high buildup rate” because of the characteristics of its flavorings and its relatively high sugar content. Some users have reported that when using Malaysian e-liquid in a pre-made flavor atomizer, they had to replace the coil every 1–2 days, saying they simply couldn’t afford the ongoing cost.

Carbon buildup affects the heating efficiency of the coil and the flavor of the vapor produced, reducing both the taste and performance of the atomizer. Because this buildup cannot be completely avoided under current heating methods, it has a major impact on coil lifespan. So how long does a vape atomizer last? If you use Malaysian e-liquid, it is best to pair it with an RBA atomizer. Even if buildup forms quickly and affects flavor and use, you can rebuild a new coil in just a few minutes, making the cost much lower than continuing to use pre-made coils.

3. A major factor affecting vape atomizer lifespan: incorrect usage. When using a new coil, whether it is pre-made or self-built in an RBA, it is important to use it correctly, especially for pre-made coils, which require some preparation before use. Most pre-made atomizers come with the coil already installed from the factory. After receiving it, users should first remove the coil and drip a small amount of e-liquid into the juice ports and onto the cotton around the coil to saturate the wick. Some people call this “priming the coil.”
