Introduction: It is reported that as many as 5 million people worldwide die every year from various diseases caused by smoking. At present, 1 in every 10 deaths globally is caused by smoking-related disease, and on average, 1 person dies every 6 seconds from illnesses caused by smoking. If smokers switched to e-cigarettes, what would the outcome be?
According to a report released by the World Health Organization, as many as 5 million people worldwide die every year from various diseases caused by smoking. Currently, 1 in every 10 deaths in the world is due to smoking-related disease, and on average, 1 person dies every 6 seconds from smoking-related illness. In addition, survey data from China shows that the number of smokers in China has exceeded 400 million, accounting for about one-quarter of the world’s smokers. Among them, as many as 5 million are minors, and the number of cancer cases caused by smoking has also been increasing year by year. According to incomplete statistics, about 1 million people in China die each year from cancers caused by smoking. However, when smokers who still enjoy smoking see these figures, what do they think, and what hidden crisis lies behind them? Or to put it another way, if so many smokers switched to e-cigarettes, what would the result be?

E-cigarettes are more user-friendly

Recently, the World Health Organization called on governments around the world to ban the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, and many countries have expressed agreement. Regardless of whether e-cigarettes are harmful, they should not be allowed to reach this group. Some brands use exaggerated marketing and develop candy-flavored e-cigarettes, which can easily attract minors or even pregnant women who smoke. E-cigarette brands already clearly state online that “minors and pregnant women must not use them,” and sales to these groups are refused.

By contrast, the tobacco industry targets smokers around the world while only printing a simple warning on cigarette packs that “smoking is harmful to health.” When it comes to buyers, no matter who they are, everyone is accepted. Therefore, the harm cigarettes bring to people around the world is already evident in the annual smoking statistics compiled by the World Health Organization—solid “evidence of guilt,” so to speak.

E-cigarettes are more stylish and better integrated into society

Farrell Delman, president of the American tobacco merchants association, believes that if the goal is to reduce the number of smokers and lower tobacco-related harm, expanding the adoption of e-cigarettes is currently the best approach. He believes that 60% of smokers want to quit but lack the methods and professional guidance to do so, and that e-cigarettes are a very good transition product that can help reduce tobacco harm. His reasoning is that “it is not yet clear whether e-cigarettes cause harm, but any harm would certainly be far less than that of cigarettes,” making them the lesser of two harms. Although the World Health Organization has issued a report stating that e-cigarettes are harmful to health, whether e-cigarettes should be classified as tobacco products still awaits scientific verification.

At present, smoking bans around the world have already been introduced and can be described as the strictest in history, but how effective are they? When will smoking bans become truly effective? Some countries have also introduced restrictions on using e-cigarettes in certain public places, while most countries still believe e-cigarettes can be used in public venues. The harm of cigarettes is certain, but even if e-cigarettes have some risk, it is minimal. At least so far, there has been no convincing scientific report proving that e-cigarettes are harmful.

E-cigarettes fit more easily into daily life

E-cigarettes contain no tar, carbon dioxide, or suspended particles, and nicotine-free options are available, such as OVALE e-cigarettes. These products come in a variety of flavors, and as smokers continue using e-cigarettes over time, the nicotine in their bodies is gradually reduced until they can completely break the smoking habit. Not to mention that e-cigarettes do not necessarily lead to dependence; even if they do, they will not harm physical health. This is the process of replacing cigarettes—controlling smoking—and then quitting smoking.

On the other hand, smoking cigarettes has become a trigger for worsening relationships between spouses, and some couples have even gone their separate ways because of it. For many smokers, using e-cigarettes is not only cheaper and harmless, but can also help them quit successfully. One major difference between cigarettes and e-cigarettes is this: with cigarettes, people tend to smoke more and more, while with e-cigarettes, they tend to use less and less, and may eventually stop altogether. It can strengthen a marriage, help with quitting smoking, and build a harmonious family—what could be better?
