Today we’re bringing you the celebrity-favorite dotmod Petri sub-ohm tank atomizer and its advanced DIY version, the Petri RTA.
Actually, both of these atomizers already had a wave of popularity back in 2016. So why are we reviewing them now? Because our channel hadn’t been established yet at that time, and now trend icons are using them too, so… we thought we’d join the fun.
Appearance and structure
In terms of appearance, the Dotmod Petri Tank (prebuilt coil) and the Petri RTA (DIY) are very similar, with the DIY version being slightly taller. Both use a traditional tank atomizer structure with bottom airflow and top filling. Inside and out, both are coated in shiny 24K gold plating—and not just a single layer—so even with long-term use, oxidation is unlikely. The build quality definitely deserves praise.
The Petri prebuilt-coil version is used much like most standard atomizers. The coil options include twisted wire, SS316 stainless steel wire, and Clapton wire. One highlight worth mentioning is the fill port under the top cap: once opened, there’s nothing in the way, making refilling quick and convenient.
The Petri RTA box says “for advanced users only.” Honestly, we think it’s even more challenging than that sounds. First, simply unscrewing the atomizer can already be difficult. Then building the coil, wicking the cotton, and connecting the deck to the chamber is another hurdle. On top of that, the top fill port is enough to make people lose their minds. (You’d better watch the video for the details—it’s hard to describe clearly in text, and typing it all out would probably take 500 words.)
Flavor and vapor production
Both atomizers perform quite well when it comes to vapor—big clouds and dense output.
As for flavor, the prebuilt-coil version is also quite impressive. It analyzes e-liquid flavors very well, produces smooth and refined vapor, and especially excels at bringing out sweetness.
The DIY version is generally good too, but the flavor transitions after atomization are not especially distinct, and it also tends to mute the flavor somewhat. The compact inner chamber structure turned out to be a little misleading.
