On the morning of August 8, China Global Television Network visited Hangseng Group, an executive vice chairman member unit of the Electronic Cigarette Industry Committee of the China Electronics Chamber of Commerce. Hangseng Group Chairman Yao Jide was interviewed as a representative of the vaping industry.
China Global Television Network (CGTN, formerly CCTV NEWS, the English-language channel of China Central Television) is a new international communications platform established by China Central Television. This was the first formal visit by CGTN to a vaping company for an interview.
The interview mainly focused on the impact of the China-US trade war on exports by Chinese vaping companies, the countermeasures adopted in response to the trade war, and expectations and judgments regarding how the continued trade war may affect the vaping industry in the future.
Electronic cigarettes were invented and are manufactured in China, with 90% exported. According to data, the global vapor product market was worth about US$10 billion in 2016, with overseas markets accounting for 95%, while the domestic market was about US$500 million (around RMB 3 billion), accounting for only 5%. Among the world’s top ten vaping markets, the United States holds the largest market at about US$4.3 billion, accounting for 43% of the global market.
Mr. Yao introduced to CGTN reporters the development of China’s vaping industry, its patent portfolio, China’s dominant position in the global vaping market, and the industry’s supporting supply chain. He noted that the overall cost of vaping in the United States is much lower than smoking cigarettes, so consumer demand will not decline. In closing, Mr. Yao called on the industry: “All companies in the industry should unite, hold the line, make good products, and ensure good quality. Only in this way can we overcome the impact of the trade war!”
The secretariat of the Electronic Cigarette Committee accompanied the interview. Secretary-General Ao Weinuo also introduced to reporters the committee’s various initiatives and the development of the vaping industry, including work on formulating vaping standards and guiding the standardized development of the industry.
