E-cigarettes under debate: do e-cigarettes actually cause harm?

Recently, Yuji Kumagai, a medical doctor affiliated with a tobacco company in a certain country, conducted a clinical study on healthy adult smokers in Japan to examine what changes would occur in their bodies after switching to the e-cigarettes produced by that company.

The results showed that after smokers switched to e-cigarettes, the levels of harmful constituents and potentially harmful constituents in their bodies dropped significantly in just five days!

The study sample included a total of 60 adult smokers in Japan, and the researchers randomly divided them into three groups.

Group A used Ploom TECH e-cigarettes, Group B continued smoking brand cigarettes, and Group C stopped smoking.

After five days, the researchers measured the physical condition of all 60 smokers. The results showed that 15 biomarkers of exposure in both Group A and Group C were significantly lower than in Group B!

At the same time, the reductions in exposure biomarkers seen in Group A were extremely similar to those in Group C!

These findings suggest that when healthy smokers switch to e-cigarettes from a well-known brand, the harmful substances in their bodies can be significantly reduced, with the reduction even approaching the level seen from quitting smoking directly!

The report was then published on the company’s website, claiming that smokers who completely switch from combustible cigarettes to Ploom TECH would significantly reduce their exposure to and absorption of harmful and potentially harmful constituents.

However, in this trial, Japan Tobacco itself was an interested party, and the e-cigarette used in the study was Ploom TECH, a product under Japan Tobacco. For this reason, the scientific rigor and credibility of the results remain uncertain.

Around the world, both research institutions and smokers in various regions have conducted many health-related studies on e-cigarettes. However, the findings have varied widely.

Professor Peter Hajek believes that e-cigarettes are safer than conventional cigarettes, at least 95% safer. Robert West, former adviser to the NHS stop-smoking service in the UK, has even compared using e-cigarettes to “drinking coffee”
