Can e-cigarettes help people quit smoking? E-cigarettes were invented in China in 2004, entered the Canadian market in 2007, and began to gain popularity in Europe and the U.S. around 2009. Due to their environmentally friendly and healthier characteristics compared to traditional cigarettes, they have attracted many smokers. It is important to note that because e-cigarettes are defined differently from cigarettes, there were not many restrictions on their sales to minors for a long time. Are e-cigarettes really non-toxic and harmless?

Many people have tried various methods to quit smoking, such as using gum as a substitute for smoking or snacking when they feel the urge to smoke, but the results have been extremely limited. In recent years, e-cigarettes have become increasingly popular, and under the enticing promotions from manufacturers, they have become the first choice for many people trying to quit smoking. Some encyclopedic entries even state: e-cigarettes are mainly used for quitting smoking and as a substitute for cigarettes.

A comparison of data between cigarettes and e-cigarettes

A medical study in the U.S. showed that e-cigarette users are three times more likely to smoke cigarettes the following year compared to non-smokers; another study indicated that even in the absence of nicotine, two substances in e-cigarettes can damage DNA strands and ultimately lead to cancer.

In 2014, the World Health Organization released a report in Geneva stating that e-cigarettes also produce toxic substances that harm health, and governments should take measures to prohibit the sale of e-cigarettes to minors. Due to the unresolved safety of e-cigarettes, governments around the world have differing attitudes and policies regarding them, with some countries, including Brazil, Norway, and Singapore, beginning to restrict or completely ban the sale of e-cigarettes.

Researchers at the University of North Carolina found that a study comparing smokers, e-cigarette users, and non-smokers showed that smoking suppressed the activity of 53 active genes in the immune system; e-cigarette users also lost activity in these 53 genes, and an additional 305 genes were also suppressed. Furthermore, the study indicated that different flavors of e-cigarettes had varying effects on gene alteration; some butter-flavored e-cigarettes on the market contain diacetyl, a culprit that causes obstructive bronchiolitis. The components, agents, and flavor additives used in e-cigarettes are not simple, and research on this is still limited.

E-cigarettes are less harmful than regular cigarettes. However, any claims that e-cigarettes are harmless, non-addictive, or can assist in quitting smoking are false! The primary function of e-cigarettes is not to help quit smoking but to replace it. What does replacing smoking mean? It means using e-cigarettes instead of traditional cigarettes. While e-cigarettes are indeed less harmful than traditional cigarettes, less harm does not equate to no harm.

Can e-cigarettes help people quit smoking? After reading this, you will understand that those who genuinely want to quit smoking should not fall into the trap of e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes may replace traditional cigarettes but do not eliminate nicotine addiction, and the real "smoking addiction" is the harm caused by nicotine poisoning.
