Last week, there was good news regarding e-cigarettes in the United Arab Emirates. The national report stated that "the UAE is actively considering legalizing e-cigarette devices and their use," which is a much-needed legal reform for local smokers!
According to Lana Gamal El Din, Director of Affairs at Philip Morris International (PMI), the potential legal reform for e-cigarette use will focus on product standards and usage dosages under the supervision of the UAE government's health regulatory agency.
PMI also stated, "We believe that the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (Esma) is seriously considering how to best manage all new tobacco products to ensure product safety and the highest quality." PMI supports transparent cooperation with all local entities, including Esma, and we are willing to comply with any specific national legal requirements. The UAE is an important market for PMI, and we hope to provide our products in the country under an appropriate regulatory framework.
This is very good news for smokers in the country, ultimately opening a door away from the deadly harms of traditional tobacco and allowing e-cigarettes and heated tobacco devices to become alternatives to conventional tobacco.
Although the legalization process may face ups and downs and be subject to opposing forces, if the focus is on harm reduction and tobacco product addiction, rational parties concerned with public health may support the UAE government's legalization of e-cigarettes, viewing this action as a step towards a healthier, smoke-free future for the people.
Regardless of whether e-cigarettes will be legalized in the UAE in the short term, from an objective perspective, this news is a good start for users and businesses of new tobacco products. Currently, domestic legislation on e-cigarettes and new tobacco products is also underway, but the positioning of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco devices remains unclear. We hope that the domestic market can quickly provide a clear definition for e-cigarettes and heated tobacco, allowing businesses to follow regulations for industry development and enabling users to choose legal and more reassuring products.
