According to information from KT&G, after a long period of declining cigarette sales, domestic cigarette sales in South Korea have recently begun to show an upward trend.
Statistics from the company indicate that from January to September 2016, domestic cigarette sales in the country reached 2.76 billion packs, an increase of 13.3% compared to the same period in 2015.
Additionally, local media reports state that after the South Korean government significantly raised the tax rates on cigarette products in 2015, leading to a substantial increase in domestic cigarette retail prices, the country's cigarette sales experienced a sharp decline. However, after more than a year, domestic cigarette sales have started to recover. Analysts believe that overall, the government's measures to raise cigarette prices have not had a significant impact on consumption.
