Vaping devices are legal in Australia, but the sale and possession of nicotine e-cigarettes are illegal. Recently, the Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance launched a campaign aimed at legalizing e-cigarettes in Australia. For this campaign, the alliance chose Liberal Democratic Party member Aaron Stonehouse as its spokesperson.
The campaign is seeking signatures from 50,000 supporters in favor of legalizing e-cigarettes, and Stonehouse plans to submit the signed petition to parliament before the end of 2018.
Stonehouse said that in developed countries, the sale of nicotine-containing e-cigarettes is legal in almost all cases, and it is time for Australia to make some changes. He believes e-cigarettes are harmless and 95% healthier than traditional cigarettes. If cigarettes are legal, then there is no reason e-cigarettes should not be, because they are better and healthier than cigarettes.
We are not encouraging non-smokers to try e-cigarettes, but the law is indeed preventing smokers who genuinely want an alternative from transitioning from harmful products to less harmful ones, which is not beneficial to their health.
According to a survey by a polling organization, a recent poll showed that among voters in Perth and Fremantle, 69% of respondents supported the legalization of e-cigarettes. Stonehouse said the poll results are encouraging, as they show that more and more Australians want the government to allow e-cigarettes to be legalized.
At the same time, Stonehouse said he was pleased to be appointed spokesperson for the legalization campaign. In the coming months, they will discuss the petition with more members of the public and also plan to work with leaders of major and minor parties who support the alliance’s campaign so they too can speak out in favor of legalizing e-cigarettes.
