How many cigarettes is one bottle of e-liquid equivalent to? E-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes differ significantly in their "materials"; traditional cigarettes use tobacco leaves, while e-cigarettes use e-liquid. Friends who are new to e-cigarettes, or even some who are already e-cigarette users, often have a question: Am I smoking more or less now that I use e-cigarettes compared to when I smoked traditional cigarettes?

Here we need to introduce a formula to calculate the equivalence between e-liquid and traditional cigarettes. E-liquid, also known as vape juice, mainly consists of propylene glycol, nicotine, vegetable glycerin, and pure water. When e-liquid is injected into an e-cigarette, the atomizer in the device heats it, producing vapor similar to that of a cigarette. The main similarity between e-liquid and tobacco is that both contain nicotine.

On the side of a cigarette pack, the nicotine content is usually indicated (sometimes as the nicotine yield). Different cigarettes have different nicotine levels. For example, with "Yuxi" cigarettes, each stick contains 1.0mg of nicotine, totaling 20mg per pack. If the e-liquid has a concentration of 3mg/ml, then each milliliter of e-liquid is approximately equivalent to the nicotine content of 3 cigarettes. If the concentration is 6mg/ml, then each milliliter of e-liquid contains the equivalent nicotine of 6 cigarettes. Other concentrations follow this pattern.

If you originally smoked a pack of cigarettes a day (using "Yuxi" as an example), then switching to e-cigarettes with 3mg/ml e-liquid would be roughly equivalent to using about 7ml of e-liquid. If your daily consumption of e-liquid is less than 7ml, it indicates that you are smoking less than before. If it is more than 7ml, it may suggest an increased nicotine craving. In the comparison above between e-liquid and tobacco, we only considered the "nicotine" component. This is because e-liquid contains only a few harmful components, primarily nicotine.

In contrast, traditional cigarettes contain not only nicotine but also carbon monoxide, amines, nitriles, carbonyl compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, heterocyclic compounds, heavy metals, and over 2000 other harmful substances. From this perspective, even if the nicotine content is equivalent, traditional cigarettes are still more harmful to the body than e-liquid.

Nicotine is not the real "culprit" of cancer, but that does not mean e-cigarettes can be abused just because they do not contain tar or carbon monoxide. It is still important to understand the relationship between e-liquid concentration and traditional cigarettes based on your actual situation.

If the nicotine content of the cigarettes you smoke is 1.1 (nicotine content = nicotine yield, usually indicated on the left side of the cigarette pack):

E-liquid ----- 1.1mg × 20 sticks = 22 milligrams

The average person consumes about 2 to 4 milliliters of e-liquid a day. If you consume two milliliters a day, it is recommended to choose 11mg. Based on the above, you can estimate how many milliliters you use.
